Joseph Obiaje Agabaidu, a final-year student at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), was fatally stabbed by unknown attackers who are thought to be phone snatchers.
The 500-level Geology student is reportedly the oldest of his family’s four children.
According to a source inside the school, he was attacked on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at around 7 p.m., as he was making his way back to his lodge, which was located near the Yelwan Tudu Market in the Yelwa area, a suburb of Bauchi city.
The source stated, “Agabaidu, a final-year Geology student from Ankpa LGA in Logo State who was based in Otukpo LGA, was fatally stabbed around 7 pm on Saturday as attackers attempted to forcefully take his phone.”
“Even though medical assistance was sent to Agabaidu right away, he died from his wounds early yesterday morning (Sunday).
This sad incident is reminiscent of one that happened in December of last year, when a fight involving a phone claimed the life of another Benue student.
We humbly request that the Bauchi State government, the police, and the school administration give student security in the state top priority in the wake of this tragic loss.
“Joseph is the older of three siblings who attend ATBU for their education. His siblings, two other university employees, and the vice president of SUG will be returning his body home.
In the meantime, word has leaked out that students will peacefully demonstrate on Monday morning to voice their complaints.
The source went on, “The protest is also intended to bring attention to the situation we’ve found ourselves in as students by the school administration, the state government, security agencies, and everyone else.”
“Students are getting set for a peaceful protest this morning,” remarked a fellow student. We are expressing our sorrow for the regrettable event that befell one of our classmates.
“I call on the management, the state government and security agencies to rise to this incident and provide more adequate security to all students who left their parents’ houses and have come to school to learn.”
