South African police in the Western Cape announced on Thursday that they have arrested a man in connection with the murder of 12-year-old Firdous Kleinsmidt.
The girl was tragically killed by a stray bullet outside her Cape Town school on January 20, 2024, while waiting for her scholar transport. The Anti-Gang Unit officers apprehended a 27-year-old man in Eastridge, Mitchells Plain.
The incident, believed to be a result of crossfire between rival gangs, led to the girl’s death. The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court on February 2. Community members protested the murder, expressing anger over the incident and rising crime in the area.
