The Association of Table Waters Producers (ATWAP) has highlighted that the price of pure water might rise to N100 per sachet due to the escalating costs of production materials.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, the group cited numerous challenges they face, including the soaring cost of diesel, inadequate power supply, and the high expenses of production. They emphasized that the current pricing of water reflects the economic situation in the country.
A spokesperson for the association expressed concerns, stating, “Currently, pure water is being sold at N50, but there’s a possibility it could increase to N100 per sachet. We are constrained by the high production costs.”
“The cost of materials such as nylon has significantly risen, from N1,100 per KG last December to N3,600/N3,700 for 6 kg of nylon now. Additionally, treatment costs have surged, with material prices skyrocketing up to three times within a week. It’s challenging for us to adjust the water price,” the spokesperson added.
The representative further highlighted the financial strain faced by water producers, many of whom fund their operations from personal funds or loans, as banks are hesitant to offer loans to pure water producers.
In light of these challenges, the association urged Nigerians to understand their predicament and emphasized their desire to keep the water price affordable, ideally not exceeding N20 per sachet. They stressed that the rising production costs, including diesel prices, have impacted their operations significantly.
