Pope Francis expressed confidence in an interview published on Monday, January 29, that critics of his decision to allow blessings for same-sex couples would eventually understand it, except for Africans, whom he referred to as a “special case.”
According to the Pope, Africans view LGBT matters as culturally unacceptable. He acknowledged strong resistance, particularly from African bishops, regarding the blessings permitted in December 2023 through the document called Fiducia Supplicans (Supplicating Trust).
Despite the pushback, the Pope trusts that over time, everyone will be reassured by the inclusive nature of the declaration. He emphasized the need for priests to consider context and sensitivities when granting blessings.
Regarding concerns about conservatives breaking away from the Catholic Church due to his reforms, the Pope dismissed them as led by “small groups” and encouraged moving forward.
