The Cross River State Police Command has apprehended a 30-year-old man, Amber Ubung, accused of assaulting his lover for failing to visit him on Valentine’s Day as promised.
State Commissioner of Police, CP Gyogon Grimah, disclosed the incident during a press briefing in Calabar on Thursday, February 22, 2024, stating that the altercation occurred in Okuni community, Ikom Local Government Area.
According to the CP, the suspect allegedly attacked his lover, Blessing Onawu, 25, with a machete after she failed to honor her commitment to spend Valentine’s night with him, despite receiving N7,000 from him for a hairstyling appointment.
“When the lady did not arrive as agreed, the suspect, Ubung, armed himself with a machete, went to Onawu’s residence, and inflicted several machete wounds on her body with the intention of causing harm,” the CP explained.
“During the altercation, the victim’s mother attempted to intervene and was also injured by the suspect,” he added.
Law enforcement officers swiftly responded to the scene, apprehending the suspect and seizing the machete. Ubung was subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further interrogation, and will face charges once investigations are concluded.
The commissioner noted that both the victim and her mother are currently receiving medical attention at separate healthcare facilities.
Grimah appealed to the public for cooperation in providing information to combat crime, assuring continued efforts by the police command to uphold peace and order.
“I want to assure law-abiding citizens that the command, under my stewardship, will continue to make Cross River maintain its record as the most peaceful state in the country.
