The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended two suspected rapists in the state.
According to a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on February 23, 2024, at approximately 11:50 PM, Adepoju Ifedayo Moses, aged 42, reported at the Ifako Gbagada Divisional Headquarters in Lagos. He claimed that earlier that day around 9:00 PM, his younger sister, whose name was withheld and aged 13, had been sent on an errand but was intercepted by a 38-year-old man who coerced her into his room and sexually assaulted her. Detectives promptly responded to the scene, rescued the victim, and arrested the suspect. Subsequent investigations revealed that the complainant, Adepoju Ifedayo, who is the victim’s uncle, had actually assaulted her earlier and coerced her to falsely accuse the initial suspect. A search of the complainant’s residence uncovered two locally made pistols and three expended cartridges.
In a separate incident, on March 12th at approximately 10:30 PM, Nene Badmus reported at the Surulere Divisional Headquarters in Lagos State that earlier that day around 7:00 PM, she discovered her 16-year-old daughter, whose name was withheld, lying by the roadside in distress, complaining of abdominal pain and bleeding.
Adejobi stated that she questioned her and the daughter revealed that one Augustine Udeh ‘m’, 33yrs defiled her by having unlawful sexual intercourse with her. He said a team of detectives from the division took the victim to a medical centre for examination and eventually apprehended the suspect.
The force police added that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun PhD, NPM, has always expressed his displeasure and zero tolerance for such inhuman acts, and ordered that perpetrators must be held accountable for their actions, punished accordingly and justice served.
‘’We must educate the populace about consent, respect, and healthy relationships. By promoting a culture of respect, dignity, and equality, we can prevent instances of rape and defilement from occurring.
Ending rape and defilement requires a concerted effort from all sectors of society. It requires us to speak out against injustice, support and protect survivors, and work towards a future where every individual is free from the threat of sexual harassment and violence.
