A 38-year-old mother of eleven, Chinyere Chukwu, along with her 17-year-old daughter, Joy Chukwu, has been apprehended in Anambra State for attempting to sell two of her sons for N1.8 million.
The arrest was made by Anambra State Women and Social Welfare Commissioner, Hon Ify Obinabo, who posed as a buyer after receiving information about the transaction.
During questioning at Prof Dora Akunyili Women Development Center Awka, Chinyere cited economic hardship as the reason for the attempted sale, explaining that she couldn’t afford to care for her eleven children. She intended to sell two of them to raise funds for the others.
Chinyere initially priced the boys at N1 million each but later agreed to sell them for N1.8 million after bargaining with the Commissioner. She mentioned that her interest in the business grew after observing her neighbor successfully sell one of her own children, and this marked her first attempt at such transactions.
The suspect, who hails from Ozubulu but resident at Okija said that she had only two children for her late husband and got the remaining 9 children after her his demise.
Her teenage daughter, who is equally the eldest of the 11 children, added that the plan was to use the proceeds in advancing her tertiary education.
The Women Affairs boss ordered that the remaining children of the suspect be taken into state government’s custody for proper care while the neighbor gets apprehended too.
Obinabo further directed that after the neighbor has been arrested, contact tracing of the kid would follow in order to retrieve the child.
