A tragic car accident near Lukoro in Edati, Niger State, claimed the lives of 13 individuals, including a newlywed bride, five bridesmaids, a brother-in-law, and six others.
The victims, consisting of current and recent graduates of the Sultan Abdulrahman College of Health Technology Gwadabawa, had gathered to celebrate the wedding of Umar Jibril Muhammad and Dental Health student Amina.
The fatal crash, occurring on the evening of Friday, January 26, 2024, resulted from speeding and reckless overtaking. Two vehicles were involved: an ash Toyota Corolla traveling from Mokwa to Bida and a commercial Nissan bus heading from Minna to Ogbomosho in Oyo State.
According to Tsukwan Kumar, the Niger State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the collision claimed the lives of eight female adults, four male adults, and one male child. Additionally, critical injuries were sustained by four female adults, one male adult, one male child, and one female child.
The injured victims received medical treatment at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Bida, while the deceased were handled accordingly. Nine victims were handed over to relatives at the crash scene upon identification, and the remaining four were taken to the General Hospital Kutigi mortuary.
