Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, expresses optimism that first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali will recover in time for the team’s quarter-final clash with Angola.
Nwabali had to exit Nigeria’s Round of 16 match against Cameroon after colliding with Cameroon winger Georges Nkoudou. Despite being stretchered off the pitch, Francis Uzoho replaced him 20 minutes before the game concluded. Nwabali, a standout performer in the AFCON tournament, has only conceded one goal in four games.
The Super Eagles are set to face the Black Antelopes at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on Friday, February 2. Peseiro acknowledges the challenge of assessing Nwabali’s injury but remains hopeful he’ll be fit for the upcoming match.
Peseiro states, “We will assess the state of Nwabali’s injury in the next 24 to 48 hours. It’s difficult to assess his condition at the moment. But I am hoping that he will be fit for the next match. I want him to play, and the players want him to play. We have 25 players here, there are other players who can do the job. If he can’t play, we have a good replacement.”
