The Algeria Football Federation has expressed interest in recruiting Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro as their next manager following the dismissal of Djamel Belmadi due to the team’s disappointing performance at the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Belmadi was relieved of his duties after Algeria failed to advance beyond the group stages of the tournament. Meanwhile, Peseiro guided Nigeria to the final of the 34th edition of the AFCON, where they were defeated 2-1 by the host nation, Ivory Coast.
Peseiro’s contract with Nigeria is set to expire at the end of the month, with the Federal Government yet to determine his future.
According to Algerian publication DZ Foot, the president of the Algerian football federation, Walid Sadi, is impressed by Peseiro’s credentials and intends to hold discussions with the Portuguese tactician regarding the national team coaching position.
The website reported that an ad-hoc commission established by the FAF has compiled a shortlist of three candidates: José Peseiro (63 years old), Vladimir Petkovic (60 years old), and Carlos Queiroz (70 years old). Although Queiroz’s name has been circulating recently as the FAF’s final choice, it appears that Peseiro has emerged as the preferred candidate for Walid Sadi.
Indeed, it is stated that Peseiro, who led Nigeria to the AFCON 2023 final, is expected to engage directly with the president of the Algerian football federation, who has been impressed by his qualifications, approach, and financial considerations.
